Lining things up
John and I both do casual domestic work in local council care homes. The work allows us to pay the rent without putting pressure on our artwork to do so. It’s also very satisfying to do a simple task well. Making art can be intense, emotionally tiring, and hard to pin down (also stimulating, energising, and exciting). It’s a joy to step aside and create some simple order. The cleaning shifts are a short, busy day concentrating on clearly defined tasks and goals. They are a meditative space.
